A couple of weeks ago Mike and I were talking and it was gently (not really) suggested that I needed a hobby. I thought about it and decided that kayaking sounded fun. Mike asked me to really read up on it and do my research before we made such a large investment. So I have been reading a book written by a local female fishing guide and absorbing the information.
Then today, I open up my email and I see an invitation for a new chapter of a woman's outdoor group called T.O.W.N - Texas Outdoor Woman Network - here in Rockport. The email said that they were having a Kayak demonstration this evening and that it was open to anyone! I can't tell you how excited this made me! I immediately called one of the ladies in charge of the group, found out what I would need and started making plans!
When I arrived at the venue, I felt like a kid in a candy store! I was so eager to learn and get in the water! We had a brief safety lesson, tried on life jackets and learned how to paddle. Then we were in the water! It was so amazing! I took what I had learned in the paddling lessons and started to paddle and started going in circles! It was then that I realized I was in a tandem kayak and didn't have enough weight in the back! One of the girls in the group, Stephanie, paddled over to me, beached her kayak, jumped in the back of mine and away we went! It was so much fun! We were laughing and talking and pointing out the neat things we saw when all of a sudden....there was a porpoise! It was so amazing! There were actually two of them and they were fishing for their dinner! Stephanie and I paddled a little closer and watched in awe and amazement! We were between 10 and 15 feet from them! It was an humbling feeling to be that close to such amazing creatures!
We then turned our kayak around and started heading back to land. Stephanie and I talked to some of the other women and helped load up the kayaks. I had such an amazing time - 3 years ago, I would have never imagined even getting into a kayak and now I'm yearning to go out again! I know my arms will be sore tomorrow, but it will be well worth it in the long run!
